When we kicked off our hosting journey with Casas Chiquita in the stunning Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, we knew we wanted to create more than just a place to stay. Our vision was for each of our Airbnbs in Luray, Rileyville and Mount Jackson to feel like a home away from home. A spot where guests could unwind, explore, and make memories that last forever. Along the way, we’ve learned a lot – about hospitality, running a business, and being part of a thriving community.

One of the first lessons we learned was that true hosting isn’t just sharing our home; it’s about creating an experience. Also, guests appreciate the little things that make a stay special.

 ✔ A warm welcome goes a long way. Think personalized messages with quick tips about the best local hiking trails, restaurants or shops.

 ✔ A spotless, well-stocked space is a must. We’re obsessive about cleanliness and use a detailed checklist to make sure every stay sparkles.

 ✔ Being available but not intrusive is key. Some guests love all the recs, while others just want privacy. We’ve gotten good at reading the room to provide just the right level of interaction.

2. A Solid Cleaning Crew Is a Game-Changer

It didn’t take long to see that consistent, high-quality cleaning is the backbone of a great Airbnb. Finding a reliable cleaning team? That took more time.

✔ We conduct monthly reviews to track cleaning quality and address any hiccups.

✔ Guest feedback is gold – it helps us tweak and improve our cleaning game.

✔ We set up a Google survey for our cleaners to self-assess and keep growing.

We’ve seen firsthand how good communication can turn a potential issue into a great review.

4. Reviews Are a Gift – Even the Tough Ones

Early on, reviews made us nervous. But now? We see them as a chance to learn and grow.

✔ Instead of taking criticism personally, we use it to fine-tune our processes.
✔ Asking for honest input from our guests and our cleaners has helped us level up.

5. Being Part of a Community Matters

Hosting isn’t only about wowing our guests. It’s just as important to be a good neighbor and support our community.

✔ Keeping the peace with the neighbors. Respecting noise levels and parking rules helps keep the balance between tourism and community living.
✔ We aim to give back. Through partnerships, referrals and just being mindful of how we operate, we do our best to benefit both visitors and locals.

Our hosting adventure with Casas Chiquita has been full of lessons – some expected, some surprising, but all valuable.
